About Talayotic Menorca: the back story

Menorca carries two UNESCO titles. The whole island has been a Biosphere Reserve since 8 October 1993 (unesco.org). And in 2023 the World Heritage Committee inscribed “Talayotic Menorca – A cyclopean island odyssey”: nine component parts across the island, chosen for the stone monuments of its prehistoric Talayotic culture (whc.unesco.org).

Two UNESCO titles

Menorca was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on 8 October 1993. The World Heritage listing of Talayotic Menorca followed in 2023, under criteria (iii) and (iv), as a series of nine component parts in the Migjorn and Tramuntana regions of the island (whc.unesco.org).

The monuments

Three kinds of monument stand out. The navetas are collective tombs shaped like upturned boats: the Naveta des Tudons, near Ciutadella, is “considered the best-preserved prehistoric monument of the Balearic Islands”, in the words of the island’s tourism foundation (menorca.es). The taulas are T-shaped stone tables at the heart of sanctuaries, as at Torralba d’en Salord and Talatí de Dalt. The talayots are the great stone towers that gave the culture its name; Torre d’en Galmés, near Alaior, is one of the largest settlements, with its own interpretation centre.

UNESCO’s title for the island’s prehistory: “a cyclopean island odyssey”.

Visiting

The Fundació Foment del Turisme de Menorca runs guided visits to the Naveta des Tudons (about 45 minutes) and to Torre d’en Galmés (about 75 minutes, with groups of up to 20); hours change with the season, so check menorca.es before you go.

Respecting the sites

Keep to the paths and don’t climb on the stones. Take water and a hat in summer: there is little shade.

Our advice: go early or late in the day, when the low light picks out the stones and the fields are quiet.
